Half of our short week is almost over, can you just deal with a couple more days of work until freedom? As you may have heard MAC has released a new collection of six nail polishes for fall/winter 2009.

This collection was created by Jin Soon, who is a professional nail artist and founder/owner of Jin Soon Natural Hand and Foot Spas in New York. To be honest, I had never heard of her before this collection came out. I’m not really one to fall all over myself following every single nail technician and fashion trend around. I like what I like, doesn’t matter what “fashion” folks tell me to like.

Soon

Just keepin’ it real. This collection definitely says “fall” to me, the (mostly) creme colors are dark, vampy and some a bit unusual. I am totally in love with a few of them and just kinda.meh. on a few others. The formula on these is pretty decent. They are thin and all applied very evenly and needed three coats. Not sure about wear compared to MAC polishes of ‘yore (which tend to be chippy) because I haven’t yet worn any of these for any length of time.

Cool Reserve Cool Reserve is a very pale grey/lavender creme. It reminds me of a lighter version of Sephora’s Metro Chic. I like this, but feel like it’s already been done before. This was three coats. For Fun For Fun is a bright purple creme. Nice, but if I see another purple creme I will SCREAM! It seems like every single collection this fall/winter has almost the same one, and I am totally burned out on them right now.

This was three coats. Dry Martini Dry Martini ROCKS MY WORLD, and you knew it would, didn’t you? This is definitely a color for people with a very specific taste for olive or army green, which I have. It’s darker and slightly more brown than both and, in case you were wondering.

This was three coats. Dance All Night Dance All Night is a burnt looking red creme. It’s pretty, but nothing original here really. This was three coats. Beyond Jealous Beyond Jealous is a gorgeous dark teal creme. This teal is definitely on the green side as you can see.

I love this one! It doesn’t look black indoors, though it does look super dark. This was three coats. Rich, Dark, Delicious Rich, Dark, Delicious is a dark chocolate brown with a very subtle shimmer, and a very apt name. WHO KNEW this would wind up being my favorite out of all these including Dry Martini?

I think it’s because I have nothing that remotely resembles this color, it’s so unique and beautiful. It looks like a dark chocolate Lindt bar or something and it screams FALL! This was three coats. Overall I am really loving half this collection, and I feel the other half we have seen a million times before.

I hope I’m not being too harsh, but like I said before, I keep things real here. I’m not friends with any of these “famous” nail technicians, and I don’t get paid to write reviews. I give my honest, sometimes not so positive opinions about products.

I hope that one of the reasons you do come here is to hear someone’s truthful, unaffected opinions, and get the straight dope. These polishes are available now on MAC’s website and at your local store and are $14.00 each.

So funny and really interesting to see that on your nails/with your skin tone/ in your photos Dry Martini does not look like baby puke (or worse!) but actually swampy, and Beyond Jealous does not look black(ish). So thanks for swatching them all and commenting like you always do: straightforward. Keep up the good work! However, they all scream or whisper Meh at me, although I might try, probably not buy, DM. Mind you it’s the equivalent of a whopping $22 over here. A note about the swooning here and there over nail techs: I guess Jin Soon is well known in NY, ‘manicurist extraordinaire’ to stars, thus giving instant cred & hipness to MAC, and to us buyers a sense of belonging to a select group of cognoscenti (sorry, conoisseurs), of Exclusivity and Style.

Too bad then that MAC is such a huge (and overpriced i may add) brand, instantly killing any suggestion of exclusivity. So: Astroturf. I much rather see collections based on what we (or you, the bloggers!) want! (think green, or holo, or both!).
