The oddest episode at Monday night’s Emmy Awards telecast raised two questions, one of which remains unanswered. The first question: Who is that? The creepy-looking gentleman who sat in the front row was familiar to viewers of “Atlanta” as Teddy Perkins. The character appeared in one episode of Season 2 as a sinister man who lives in a mansion with his brother.
The second question: OK, but who is it, really? On “Atlanta,” Perkins was played by Donald Glover, wearing facial prosthetics and heavy white makeup. (The credits list Teddy Perkins as being played “by himself.”) The initial assumption was that Glover was under the makeup of the Emmys’ Perkins — but Glover was in also in the audience as himself. Some people guessed that the Emmys’ Perkins was another “Atlanta” star, Lakeith Stanfield. But Stanfield was also in the audience.

Neither Glover nor Stanfield was seen in the same shot of the audience as Perkins, leaving open the scenario that one of them did a quick change — but both are seen with Perkins in images tweeted Tuesday morning on the Twitter account of the fictional Teddy. The speculation was that Perkins would have taken the stage had “Atlanta” won, and that may have brought more clarity. As it is, the mystery persists.
