Quite honestly, I’ve been frustrated with Apple since the start of FCPX. Many FCP editors feel that Apple abandoned them, by changing FCP so drastically. On the surface it appears that Apple did not consider the needs of professional editors. On the other hand I will say that FCP X offers many advantages, especially the ability to import different formats and start editing right away without having to transcode the footage first. That saves time and hard drive space. Many editors find it challenging to learn how to work with the magnetic timeline.
The challenge for all FCP 7 editors is finding the time to learn this new software while meeting deadlines. However I’ve found many FCP X training tutorials out there. So that’s promising. I took a huge gamble switching from Adobe to all in on Apple in 2005. I loved Final Cut Pro, and thought the $1295 I spent was a great value for what it was. It was a huge learning curve going from Premiere to FCP, but in four weeks we switched over and were getting projects out the door. The last version was what I thought a perfect editing program. And then, as your article noted, Apple pulled an incredibly arrogant move by making that version cease to work when you upgraded their OS, and forcing the new version on everyone, assuming was would be okay throwing out all the time invested, having to literally close shop for a time so our team could learn something all over again when there was absolutely nothinig wrong with what we had, and learning that horrible new version all over again.
Thank goodness I discovered Premiere had caught up and surpassed Apple during the time we were away. I have always loved Apple, but they have made many mistakes in the last five years (and Photos has just become worse and worsewe are complete back in Photoshop as well) and I just would never trust them again by going back to FCP, even though I’m impressed with what you pointed out in your review. It is a huge investment of time, and if I went back and they ran out of ways to improve it, I don’t think they would hesitate to pull the same thing on all of us again.
